125 orphan children live at this orphanage. Most have been orphaned due to the civil wars and the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in this region. He gets no assistance or financial help from the government. The future of these children and this orphanage is completely dependent on outside donations and contributions. I have spent many months at this orphanage since my first meeting in 2010 and have learned the true meaning of the word "family" by seeing how each child is loved and cared for. No matter how little food they may have to eat or clothes to wear they know they are safe and loved.

In 2015 we started a farming cooperative for the farmers in Nyango Village. 80% of Nyango are subsistence farmers, most of these are women. We started with 50 farmers and their families, we have now increased to 225 farmers and families.
Nyango Village is where our orphanage is located and we felt it important to create a project that benefited all the members of Nyango and their families.
We have implemented a 100% organic farming project that provides professionally staffed workshops. These workshops teach:
WHAT WE NEED TO EXPAND THIS PROGRAM:
In 2013 WE CAAN INC started a WOMEN'S COOPERATIVE FARMING PROJECT benefiting widows and children. The village chief wanted to support our women's farming project so he loaned some of his family land to our group. The women and villagers cleared, planted, and harvested crops on about 10 acres of land. Upon harvest the food was donated to the widows and orphans in the village first, then to other villagers, and the excess was sold to raise money to help pay school fees for the orphan children.
Since the start of our project we've produced fantastic results. From donations worldwide we've funded a clean water project installing pipes running from the local mountains into Ngoundoup Village, providing clean drinking water for the entire village.
With this new sense of hope and optimism for everyone in this village, in 2016 the village chief formally donated to our farming cooperative a very generous permanent land grant of approximately 30 acres! We have started cultivation on 20 of these acres. The villagers cleared these first 20 acres by hand, prepared the land for cultivation, they have planted their staple crops, vegetables, and fruit trees. Profits from the sale of excess crops are used to help the widows and orphaned children in the village and offer jobs to the young adults in this village to help support their families. I
This project is in need of additional funding so another 20 or 30 acres of our donated land can be cleared and cultivated.

Native women head all of our WE CAAN projects. Head to our blog read about Zoulie's inspiring story.
Located in NORTHERN MALAWI on the shore of Lake Malawi.
In 2014 using some monies left to me when my mother passed away we funded the construction of a "Mkwiya Study Center & Women's Cooperative" building. The construction of this building became a true "village project". A local woman, Jenet Chiumia, donated a plot of her family land for the building site. And then using their local red soil the villagers in Mkwiya made and fired ALL the bricks that were used in the construction, about 80,000 bricks in total! Jenet was hands-on during the entire construction and a beautiful and sturdy building was completed.
This building is now being used as the meeting place for our women's cooperative, "Tsogolo Iowala", and is a teaching facility offering young people an opportunity to learn about the importance of their environment and ways to recycle and keep their village clean and sustainable. In addition, a women's HIV group holds regular weekly meetings here to give each other support and share knowledge.
Our women's cooperative, TSOGOLO IOWALA, are an incredible group of 20-women strong. Primarily widows, single mothers, and women with large families. They have formed a bond that proves what a small yet mighty group of women can accomplish.
In January 2020 we funded a project designed just for them. With Jenet as supervisor, they have constructed a Chicken house for raising chickens for sale and are just now in the completion stages of finishing the Pig house (sty) where they will raise pigs for sale. We are really excited for them and know without a doubt their success will be transformational for themselves and their families.
Stay tuned for more updates- as we know that only the sky is the limit for these ladies!!
